Tyrannosaurus Rex Size

It can be difficult to estimate the size and weight of any extinct animal such as Tyrannosaurus Rex, particularly when relatively few fossils specimens have been found (as is the case with Tyrannosaurus Rex).

The reasons why this may be the case include:
  1. If we only have a few fossils, we don't know whether they fairly represent typical animals.

  2. Fossil specimens are often incomplete.

  3. There can be some doubt about how to reassemble fossil skeletions (indeed in the case of Tyrannosaurus rex, Henry Fairfield Osborn, - who named, and first described the animal - produced what is now believed to be an inaccurate reconstruction).

  4. Fossils usually preserve only bones, horns, and teeth - at most - so estimates of muscle and other soft-flesh are often speculative.

With these caveats, we can offer these estimates for an adult Tyrannosaurus Rex:
  • An adult Tyrannosaurus Rex would typically have been about 40 feet (12.3 meters) long. Some Tyrannosaurus Rex were a larger - for example, "Sue" (a Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil currently in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois) is about 42 feet (12.8 meters) long.

  • An adult Tyrannosaurus Rex would typically have been about 13 feet (4 meters) tall at the hips.

  • The largest known adult Tyrannosaurus Rex skulls are about 5 feet (1.5 meters) in length.

  • Tyrannosaurus rex had a variety of different teeth, of various different sizes, but the largest teeth would have been about 12 inches (30 centimeters) long including the root.

  • An adult Tyrannosaurus Rex would typically have weighed about 7½ tons.
